MEJOR Communities stands for Managing, Executing and Joining Opportunities for Rural Communities. In Spanish, mejor means better. Founded on the idea that health creates opportunities, MEJOR Communities is a nonprofit organization that aims to create opportunities in rural areas of Peru through our health education programs and projects.

MEJOR Communities focuses specifically on rural communities in Peru, as it is here that health problems are most prevalent and under-addressed. Although these communities are often difficult to reach, they are also the poorest in resources and opportunities. We understand the importance of showing perseverance to the communities in order to develop positive, trusting relationships.

Our efforts to train youth health promoters(YHP) in these rural communities helps raise awareness, excitement, and self-esteem among the youth. These YHP then distribute the information to the rest of their communities through the development of their own projects. Once one of these proposed ideas is agreed upon by YHP, the community, and MEJOR Communities, we support them as leaders of the project through technical, and/or financial support. Through this process youth are born into leadership, health education is effectively distributed, and the community learns that they have the power to make changes in their lives.

MEJOR Communities is recognized as a nonprofit organization in the state of Oregon. We are also recognized by the IRS as a federally tax exempt organization under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.
